For the 2024 edition of the Westbund Art Fair in Shanghai, we developed a sculptural typographic system. Inspired by art’s ability to highlight contrasts and open up new perspectives, the letters are shaped through an interplay of soft, rounded curves and sharp, angular edges. This work treats the letterform with the same confidence and presence as one would expect from monumental sculptural works in art. Each letter asserts itself boldly as a form, as a sculpture, commanding the space of its medium.

To bring this concept to life, we used all the letters of the word “Westbund,” allowing each character to unfold its unique sculptural quality. The white surface of each medium becomes a gallery-like white cube for each individual letter. The information about the art fair recedes into the background, much like the labels of artworks in a museum. Constantly in motion, the letters shift and reshape themselves anew with every passing second, as if they are continuously being sculpted. This ceaseless transformation reflects the creative process itself: comparing, adjusting, and refining until the final form emerges.
